Claire Wong, a Physical Therapist in Montgomery County, Maryland, identified a critical need for adaptive equipment among children with disabilities. Facing long wait times, insurance denials, and high costs, she began facilitating equipment exchanges among families. This led to the founding of Equipment Connections for Children (ECFC) in 2009, a non-profit with 501(c)(3) status by 2010. ECFC connects donated adaptive equipment with children in need in the greater Washington Metropolitan area. Starting with 91 requests in its first year, the organization saw requests grow to 419 by 2015 and continues to expand. Operating initially from a small storage facility, ECFC moved to a permanent space in 2017, and then again in 2020, aiming to ensure all available adaptive equipment reaches children who need it.
